Trinket Box, repousse with fine detailed Chrysanthemum motifs

A very dainty, silvery box, with fine detailed Chrysanthemum repousse decoration.

On the exterior, it is beautifully decorated with several Chrysanthemum flowers. On the sides of the box, the repousse depicts a turbulent sea with several sparrows flying above them. The whole piece is so intricately decorated. It really shows the skill of the craftsman who made it.

"The Chrysanthemum or Kiku in Japan is a symbol that represents longevity and rejuvenation. When first introduced to Japan the Japanese Royal family was fascinated with the flower and it became the Imperial Family Emblem."

The interior of the box is lined in the base with wood. The wood is in good condition.

The base is quite scuffed and scratched which does indicate that the piece has some age. The base bears some sort of mark but has already faded due to age.

The exterior of the box is in very good condition, but key is missing. However the hinge is broken and the box lid is separate to the base. However the box is still a very beautiful and decorative item.
Content: a little tray with 6 small cups, perhaps for drinking wine. The tray and the cups are all repousse with dragon motifs.

Measurement: appr. 8.5" (L) x 5.5" (W) x 2" (H).
Weight: almost 2.5 kilo.

Price is negotiable!

 Nyonya Porcelain (SOLD)

RM8,000 (nego)

The vase is brightly enameled with shaped panels containing a single phoenix (each on both side of the vase) amid peony blooms and foliage against a turquoise-green ground. The neck and shoulder adorned with moulded pairs of lion-dogs and lizard-like animals. Phoenixes and peonies traditionally were associated with nonya brides.

The rim is flower-shaped, which has gilt edging. On the inside, flowers and foliage against a white glaze.

The lower part of the base has a border of stylised lotus petals in the form of brightly coloured yellow and coral pink lappets, and the upper part of the neck, just beneath the rim has a scalloped border of yellow lappets within grey-blue and pink borders.

We seldom find a tall and big Famille Rose Green-Ground Baluster Vase such as this in Straits Chinese household.

The condition of this large vase is very good. There is faded shop or factory mark on the bottom.

Size: 23" (height) x 31" (mid-girth)

Vases were not used in the Straits Chinese house to decorate rooms with bunches of cut flowers. Instead, pairs of baluster vases such as the example here were used on the family altar to hold flowers, usually freshly-cut chrysanthemums - meant as offerings to the gods and the spirits of the departed. They were placed on the altar with other religious objects.

Owner is moving to a smaller place, and this item has to go.

Price is negotiable. (SOLD)
